This fun, seasonal writing activity will allow your younger students to take their snowman on an adventure. Once your students have completed the activity, their work can be hung in the hallway or your classroom.

You can choose any type of structure for the writing. The student work in the photos followed this format:

"My snowman went to _______."

"She/he got _______."

For the artwork, students cut out the basic snowman (PDF snowman pattern), glued it to another piece of white paper and then added decorations that went with the location their snowman visited. The students' writing was published onto lined paper which was cut. Finally, both the writing and snowman picture were mounted to large piece of construction paper.

This activity lends itself nicely to focusing on a specific subject within science and social studies. You can provide your students with one or more locations to choose from. Once they get to that location, they need to share something their snowman did that is related to something they have learned about that particular topic. Here are a few ideas:

  • Your snowman travels to the desert. What type of animals might he see?
  • Your snowman travels to rainforest. What type of climate would he encounter?
  • Your snowman travels to fire station. What type of equipment would he see?
